This Monday and Tuesday, everyone was tasked with creating their own self designed, solo challenge. I decided, after hearing the input of some of my friends, that writing a song, performing it, and posting the performance online would be the perfect challenge for me.
I enjoy music and love playing my guitar, but I am not very comfortable with playing covers of songs in front of people, let alone my own song. I started Monday by quietly playing chord progressions in the park, trying to think of a subject for my song.
Finally, I jotted down the first verse, and met up with my friend. We discussed our challenges and how our day had gone thus far. I played her the first section of the song and she supported my efforts.
We decided to stick together and continue to support each other on our challenge. After a full day and a half of writing, my song was done. This challenge has been the most productive for me out of all the things I’ve attempted on this trip. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to do something that I’ve been dreaming of starting, but never have due to my insecurities.
All in all, I’m glad I did this. I now have the urge and the confidence to continue to try and get better at song writing and performing.
